Howto Upgrade Pidgin into 2.5.8 version

The solution is upgrade the Pidgin into 2.5.8 version.


Via terminal console

The steps:

1. Open the terminal, then copy-paste these commands and press "enter" :
   $ sudo su

Choose the Ubuntu distro that you use;

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
# echo deb ftp://repo.ugm.ac.id/pidgin-developers/ hardy main >>/etc/apt/sources.list

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
# echo deb ftp://repo.ugm.ac.id/pidgin-developers/ intrepid main >>/etc/apt/sources.list

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope
# echo deb ftp://repo.ugm.ac.id/pidgin-developers/ jaunty main >>/etc/apt/sources.list

2. For the security, do not forget to get out from the mode root, by typing this command :
# exit

3. Next, update the package list and pidgin package by typing this command :
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install pidgin pidgin-data

4. Backup the previous pidgin configuration by changing the folder's name, on the terminal
type :
$ mv .purple .purple-backup

5. Run the pidgin, add the yahoo user and login.


Via Graphic

The Steps:

1. Run the package manager application by clicking the System |Administration|Synaptic Package Manager menu (figure 1) ;
2. On the Synaptic Package Manager,click Settings |Repositories menu (figure 2);
3. On the appeared dialogue, click Third Party Software tab, then click the Add button, there will appear an entry dialogue to input the source list (figure 3);

4. Copy paste these lists below and click Add Source button;

5. After adding, click the Reload button on the Synaptic Package Manager (figure 4);
6. If there is a note "error GPG key", please ignore it, click Close button (figure 5)
7. The last step, serach the application namely "pidgin" and "pidgin-data", right-click on the package's name and choose Mark for Upgrade and click Apply button;
8. Open the file browser, referring to “/home/nama_user_name_anda”, press the Ctrl+h to show the hidden file. Then find a folder “.purple”, change the name into“.purplebackup”
9. Run the Pidgin, add the yahoo account and login.
